Water is the essential element of life. Yet, our mother earth and its water is facing a series of crisis. By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population may face water shortages. And ecosystems around the world will suffer even more.

In collaboration with Edinburgh Science Festival, our class has designed a range of costumes which focuses on the solutions which tackles water related problems and pollutions.

For my designs specifically, I would like to raise awareness of coral bleaching and passes the message to our children. For the past years, we heard a lot about coral bleaching. However, most people have little knowledge about the importance of coral and the impact of its bleaching. We need to change our mindsets from ‘this is unpleasant but it does not bother me’ to ‘we appreciate and love the environment, therefore we care’. The costumes are made out of at least 80% recycled materials such as curtains, old clothings and straws. Inspired by different types of corals and scuba diving suits, the designs are playful and cartoon-like, each costume impersonates a coral or a specific role. They touch upon the impacts of coral bleaching, marine beauty and innovative solutions.
