During 2020, the Black Lives Matter Protest and my own bodily experience with racism during the pandemic inspired me to design a production which explore racial equality and send the message of ‘love&peace’. No race is superior or inferior to another and no one should have poorer life. We should learn to love and accept others’ individuality and our own identities. Do not impose on others what yourself do not desire. Be who you are and follow your dreams. Nevertheless, unity is strength, stand up for what is right, working hard for change is never a futile endeavour. Targeting family audiences, the objective is to lead the audiences to understand the feeling of being discriminated and reflect on their own actions in daily life.

My version of the Hairspray Musical takes place in a bright and colourful futuristic cityscape, an exotic planet in the parallel universe away from Earth. Taking inspiration from the 1960s Civic Rights Movements and the history of slavery in the United States, Humans were enslaved by the Aliens century ago to the planet and were discriminated by race. Taking inspirations from the 1960s’ countercultures and combine them with the futuristic aspects, created an exciting atmosphere which corresponds to the music. The characters are also wearing exaggerated wigs or headpieces to tie-in with the original production.
